Fic one: Protagonist very recently, like, last week, left home to live with a friend. Protagonist wonders how his newly estranged family found him, then reflects that "the internet still exists". Technically a true statement in 1994, however, it's perhaps a bit more likely that they just used the phone book.

Fic two: Protagonist is touristing in NYC, casually stops in a bodega, buys a flip phone so he can text people. Not in 1992 he didn't - texting via phones was only just invented that year and phones were bricks!

You gotta laugh. Kindly and gently, but still - you gotta laugh!

I finished reading my “spare” book today: Fatally Frosted by Jessica Beck. It’s the second installment in the “Donut Shop” series of cozy mysteries. The main character is Suzanne Hart, who owns and runs Donut Hearts.

Suzanne is both excited and anxious about demonstrating donut-making at a local tour of kitchens fundraiser. Marge Rankin has asked Suzanne to showcase her kitchen for the demonstration. Suzanne is mildly surprised that Marge was chosen, considering her animosity with Peg Masterson, who is spearheading the tour. When Peg drops dead on the first morning of the tour, right outside Marge’s house, she’s found clutching one of Suzanne’s signature donuts. With her business reputation on the line, Suzanne starts applying herself to finding out who used one of her donuts to deliver a lethal dose of poison.

I enjoyed the story for the most part. I thought Suzanne was somewhat pushy when she was asking questions of those whom she suspected may have murdered Peg. Most of the story was taken up with Suzanne’s sleuthing. She was shown at work and socializing a little bit, but I would prefer more balance. Characters were fleshed out, and the plot proceeded in a sensible fashion.

Favorite lines:
♦ “I’m a cop; trust me, I know donuts.”
♦ I couldn’t have been more surprised if she’d handed me a hundred dollar bill or a live chicken.
♦ Peg could have left every dime to the Society to Outlaw Daylight Savings Time for all I knew.
♦ “Sometimes I think authors have their characters do foolish things just to advance the plot.”

Decent enough to earn four stars.

This was Miami Vice Sunday. There was a new fic and a new song vid. Which almost never happens. It was like Christmas.

I've been watching a lot of episodes and doing my recap posts, but I haven't been writing a lot because the dictation on the computer sucks. I keep having to fix things, and it's hard typing one handed. Plus, I haven’t got the hang of dictating my stories into the computer. It takes me longer than if I was able to type it. However, since I'm bored anyway, I should take this opportunity to dictate my Quantum Leap novel Dreamchaser into the computer so I can post it online. I wrote it before I had a computer and never transferred it over.

Just as I was closing my house manager shift last night, an important door lost an integral part. So, I was late getting home.

Today, get in, door not fixed. I get to make sure it is used judiciously.

During the early part of the evening shift, someone on campus, concerned that there was someone on campus pretending to be a cop, decided that the best course of action was to dress entirely in black, including mask, then approach random people to warn them there was a fake cop on campus. This did not instill calm but the campus cops dealt with it.

As I was waiting to go home, I thought I could smell skunk. Asked my HM about it. It seems someone managed to anger the local skunk enough to get sprayed. Not me!

This evening's dream involved
getting swallowed by a hellmouth
(teeth teeth so many teeth)
with the Legends, so Ray, Nate and John were there, but everyone got split up
until I was just sticking with John
but gradually becoming less and less sure he was in fact actual John
which, in Hell, could be seriously Consequential.

Hell was a lot more like a going out of business sale in a department store than Dante wrote it
but it was otherwise pretty themey by floor.

The basement was cold and flooded
and I stopped the lift before we got drowned
but then had to decide
stay with and support (probably) John
or leave (that) him
and either way gamble with belonging down there.

I woke up thinking I should reread the Inferno

... but possibly the Niven version...

I spent most of this weekend procrastinating when I really should have been tidying up and vacation planning and all those things. Uugh. At least I met up with LB and my mom to finally do the pottery painting we gifted her for Christmas, I went for a walk, and I finally made a little bit of progress on the massive pile of fanworks I want to comment on.

A major part of that procrastination was watching round one of MCSR Ranked playoffs season 10, that was at least entertaining.

I can't believe Hax is out! Got swept, even! Wow. First time he's not on the podium since he first played in the playoffs in season 3. And Doogile got reverse swept. Some bad luck involved in both cases (blinding to different strongholds from the same spawner?!) but also some bad decisions and that's just how it goes sometimes. Like when BeefSalad forgot to set a bed for a death reset xD
The Infume vs HDMICables match was my favorite, Infume with very clean wins except whatever the fuck that was in round 3 (both failed the zero, Infuse choked a one cycle and HDMI missed a perch), what an End, that was great xD I'm sad Feinberg vs Lowkey had to be postponed, but I do enjoy the "Feinberg finally made it to week 2" jokes.

But I'm definitely not "in" the MCSR fandom, that would be way too time-consuming, I just like the tournaments for the exciting sports emotions. And me putting on various MCSR streams in the background sometimes doesn't mean anything. ~~Oh no.~~

She’d seen him before, during one of her overstays in Solitude, walking the road toward The Blue Palace. He was heading opposite, his face as grim then as it was now, stride heavy; children and guards alike leapt out of his way.

He was, she’d soon learned over tea with Sybil Stentor, Solitude’s court mage, a regular visitor to the palace and a regular thorn in Jarl Torygg’s side when it came to the rising tensions with the Empire.

“The Jarl had me read for him,” Sybil had said, peering into the clouds of cream swirling in her cup. “Ulfric is a focal point for this war, in more ways than one. Torygg needs to be careful.”

The book of Portland stairs I've been using is a hot mess when it comes to SW Portland. The problem is not the edition, I checked the updates. Parts of the SW Waterfront have been redeveloped, that is not the issue. There are old, major pedestrian stairs not in the book. There are stairs on the list that I cannot find the location of on a map. I am not bad with maps, I still using a paper atlas for some things. I am reasonably familiar with this city. It is not user error.

I will continue to use the book for most of Portland and check off as much as I can, but yeah this book and checklist become hot messes in a certain section of town.

I did so many staircases this week, and I cannot make ticky parts on my progress list about it!

Anyway, let's start with Rocky Butte where I was only going to do the main path and wouldn't need my walking stick:

Portland has some areas with a bunch of fountains and brutalist architecture. I need to spend a lot more more down there to figure out good shots of it all.

I love Ira Keller Fountain. So many neat shapes, visual rhythms, scraggly pines, but it's hard to shoot well. ( Read more... )
